Sustainable energy for McDonald’s
The McDonald’s location in Pombal, Portugal, is now using green energy. The targeted peak shaving ensures optimum electricity utilization.
In just four months, over 70,000 kWh of renewable energy was produced – enough to cover 60% of the store’s energy requirements. This project demonstrates how large companies such as McDonald’s are increasingly moving towards sustainable energy supply and relying on trusted solutions from Voltfang.

Advantages for McDonald's
Implemented use case
The McDonald’s branch benefits in numerous ways from our sustainable industrial storage system. In particular, peak loads during daytime operations at McDonald’s, from 7-10 a.m. and 6-9 p.m., are effectively shaved. This customized solution enables McDonald’s to become less dependent on expensive grid electricity and to ensure a sustainable, cost-efficient energy supply.
Aim of the project
The store has set itself the goal of increasing its energy independence by using a Voltfang battery storage system together with photovoltaic systems. At the same time, the aim was to achieve a more sustainable energy supply by using 2nd life batteries from electric vehicles. This lowered operating costs and reduced the ecological footprint.
The result was the production of over 70,000 kWh of renewable energy in just four months, which corresponds to 60% of the branch’s energy requirements. This illustrates McDonald’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency in its operations and demonstrates the potential of renewable energy in the food service industry.
Our customized solution
The Voltfang commercial storage system used by McDonald’s was supplied with a capacity of 58 kWh and an output of 30 kW. The system is equipped with high-quality inverters to ensure efficient power conversion.
