Large-Scale Battery Storage Facility in Aachen
Old Industry Gets a New Lease on Life: Trading Storage at TRIWO Park
A large-scale battery storage facility is being built on the site of the former Philips factory in TRIWO Park Aachen, utilizing the existing grid connection capacity of a substation. The storage facility trades electricity on the day-ahead and intraday markets and provides balancing power. Voltfang is implementing the project as a full-service EPC contractor and will handle technical operations.
Capacity
21 MWh
Performance
10 MW
Storage duration
2 h
Grid connection
Medium voltage (10 kV)
Location
Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia
Project Overview
- Location: TRIWO Park Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia
- Grid connection: New connection to the existing substation on the site, 10 kV level
- Voltfang’s role: Full-EPC · Technical operation
- Investor: Palladio Partners
- Market participation: Day-Ahead, Intraday, balancing power (FCR/aFRR)
- Status: Under construction, commissioning planned for the end of Q4 2026
One warehouse, three markets
The 2h storage system performs cross-market optimization: physical and virtual trading on the day-ahead and intraday markets. In addition, the storage system provides primary control power (FCR) and secondary control power (aFRR), thereby stabilizing the power grid. It charges and discharges flexibly and balances out fluctuations in the grid.
Old Industry, New Infrastructure
Where electronics were once manufactured, a storage facility will stabilize the grid in the future
The site was previously used for industrial purposes by Continental and Philips. Due to the decline in energy-intensive manufacturing, connection capacity has become available there, which the storage facility utilizes via the existing substation. Instead of developing new sites, the existing grid infrastructure is being reused.
