A grid-scale project is a large-scale battery storage facility that absorbs, stores, and feeds electricity back into the public grid or from renewable energy sources as needed. It is based on modern lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are installed in containers and controlled via intelligent energy management systems. They react to grid fluctuations in milliseconds and thus make a decisive contribution to the stability of the power grid.
Grid-scale storage systems perform several tasks simultaneously:
Grid stabilization: Balancing voltage fluctuations and frequency deviations.
Integration of renewable energies: Excess solar or wind power is stored and made usable later.
Cost savings: Local storage solutions can partially avoid expensive grid expansions.
Speed: Storage systems provide balancing energy within seconds – significantly faster than conventional power plants.
Without storage, renewable energies can only be used to a limited extent. Grid-scale projects make it possible to store surplus electricity and provide it during bottlenecks. This allows wind and solar plants to be better integrated into the grid, replaces fossil fuel power plants, and reduces CO₂ emissions.
Voltfang works with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) storage systems, which are particularly safe, durable, and cost-efficient. Combined with modern inverters and control software, they offer maximum grid stability. Cooling and fire protection systems, as well as recycling and second-life concepts, ensure safety and sustainability.
The process consists of several steps:
Site analysis: Assessment of the area, grid connection, and permit eligibility.
Permits: Urban development planning, environmental impact assessments, and coordination with authorities.
Planning & Financing: Technical design, lease and grid agreements, investment planning.
Construction & Installation: Erection of storage containers, grid connection, and commissioning.
Operation: Long-term operation with ongoing maintenance, monitoring, and service.
Dismantling: At the end of the lease period, the battery storage system is completely removed without leaving any residue.
It usually takes 18 to 36 months from the site assessment to operation. The biggest time factors are permits and grid connection tests. The construction itself usually only takes a few months.
