Planning & Implementation

From the initial analysis to a turnkey storage solution.

Most delays occur before ground-breaking.

Grid connection, permits, fire safety, civil engineering: Many of the risks associated with a storage project don’t become apparent until late in the process—and can then set things back by weeks. That’s why we address them right from the start.

The Process

Three Phases to a Flow-Through Storage System

Phase 1 of 3

Planning

Analysis & Custom Design

Every project begins with a thorough analysis. We assess your energy needs, your infrastructure, and your financial goals—and use that information to design a storage solution that makes financial sense for you.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

We analyze load profiles or generation profiles and identify the use cases that are most beneficial for you.

Expert Advice with Battery Expertise

The experience gained from more than 300 storage projects since 2020 is incorporated into every design.

On-site inspection

A Voltfang engineer inspects the site, the area, and the utility connection.

Preliminary Technical Planning

Integration into your infrastructure, with fire protection included from the start.

Phase 2 of 3

Approve

Building Permit Application & Utility Connection Registration on Your Behalf

The types of permits your project requires depend on its location, size, and intended use. A grid connection application is required for every storage system connected to the grid; whether a building permit is also required is governed, among other things, by the relevant state building codes. We’ll clarify this at the outset—and handle all the necessary permits.

Building Permit Application

We will prepare the documents and submit them on your behalf.

Network registration

In accordance with the applicable connection rules, including coordination regarding the connection point.

Coordination with Network Operators and Government Agencies

We’ll address any questions directly.

Fire Safety Plan

Included in the documentation from the very beginning.

Phase 3 of 3

Integration

Turnkey Installation & Commissioning

We integrate your storage system into your existing infrastructure on a turnkey basis—whether at your company, at a wind or solar farm, or directly at the grid connection point. For specific trades, such as civil engineering or electrical installation, we work with experienced partners. We retain full coordination and responsibility.

Installing the Storage Unit

Delivery, installation, and connection of all components.

Other Construction Services

Civil engineering, foundations, electrical installation, and, if necessary, a transformer and switchgear.

One contract, one point of contact

A single point of contact from the kick-off to final acceptance

Commissioning & Handover

Testing, acceptance, and, where necessary, facility certification.

Frequently Asked Questions About Planning and Implementation

– Voltfang handles two aspects: During the planning phase, we analyze requirements and cost-effectiveness, design the system, and handle the permitting and grid connection processes until the project is ready for construction. During implementation, as the general contractor under a full EPC contract, we are responsible for components, civil engineering, installation, grid connection, and commissioning—one contract, one point of contact.

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement & Construction—the planning, procurement, and construction of a storage facility, from the signing of the contract through to commissioning. Under a full-EPC contract, Voltfang, as the general contractor, is responsible for all aspects of the project through to turnkey handover.

Wenig: You provide data on consumption, grid connection, and area; grant access to the site; and approve the milestones. Voltfang takes care of the rest.

Ideally, load profiles or annual consumption, details about the existing grid connection (capacity, voltage level), the available space, and—if available—PV data. For large-scale projects, the location and connection point should also be included. We’ll work together to fill in any missing information.

That depends on the size and location. Generally, a building permit and grid registration with the grid operator are required; for systems above a certain size, a system certificate in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4110/4120 is also required. Voltfang clarifies the requirements early on and submits the applications on your behalf.

That depends on the voltage level: Commercial storage systems are usually connected in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4105 or 4110, while large-scale projects are connected in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4110 or 4120. We plan and register the connection in accordance with the applicable connection regulations.

This depends primarily on the grid connection and the permit. For commercial storage facilities, the process is usually much faster than for large-scale projects, where building codes and grid connection approval set the pace. We’ll determine the specific timeline after the site assessment.
