Voltfang wins in the Energy Storage and Distribution category with its green battery storage system

Aachen, November 28, 2024: Voltfang, a leading manufacturer of green battery storage for industrial, commercial, and grid-scale applications based in Aachen, has won the German Sustainability Award 2025 in the Electrical Engineering & Electronics sector within the Energy Storage and Distribution category. Voltfang’s eco-friendly battery storage systems, made from requalified batteries, are primarily used by SMEs and industry to store surplus energy. The technology offers companies opportunities for intelligent electricity use, peak shaving, and intraday trading, among other benefits. Through the second-life approach of its battery storage and the resulting reduction in CO2 emissions, the Aachen-based company is making a significant contribution to the energy transition. This year’s German Sustainability Award is presented in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the WWF.

For David Oudsandji, founder and CEO of Voltfang, securing the supply of energy and raw materials in Europe is of central importance: “The German Sustainability Award for Voltfang shows that sustainability must be considered in all its multidimensionality. Our work not only protects the environment but also strengthens the German economy. A functioning circular economy creates jobs, conserves vital resources, and reduces dependence on imports.“

Roman Alberti, founder and CEO of Voltfang, adds: “The biggest challenge for us was to develop an innovative solution that drives the energy transition from what was supposedly a waste product of the automotive industry. To be able to use lithium-ion batteries from EVs in stationary operation after their first life cycle, we developed our own testing system with comprehensive tests and data analysis. This advanced system guarantees the longevity and safety of our storage systems.”

The sorted-out and overproduced batteries have an average capacity of 90% and are ideally suited for use in stationary storage systems, which make a central contribution to the sustainable energy transition. In spring 2024, Voltfang published its impact report on the topic of “A Resilient Europe through Green Battery Storage.” Last year, by producing green storage solutions from second-life and new-life batteries, Voltfang was able to save nearly 200 tonnes of CO2 equivalents and more than 270 tonnes of critical raw materials. Voltfang also places a strong focus on local manufacturing and the origin of storage components to strengthen the regional economy. Around 93% of the storage components come from Europe, with 16% coming directly from Aachen.
