Another specific use case is what is known as “smart charging.” Here, the charging process for electric vehicles is automatically adjusted to the variable electricity rate in order to take advantage of the optimal time-of-use (TOU) period. Precisely adjusting the charging and discharging behavior of the battery storage system to fluctuations in electricity rates also supports the sustainable use of renewable energy, as excess energy is stored and used during periods of low renewable generation.

This use case is based on a time-of-use (also known as dynamic) electricity rate, which all major electricity providers will be required to offer starting in 2025. For example, industrial companies or agricultural businesses with energy-intensive processes can achieve significant cost savings with TOU, as an energy storage system ensures that only the cheapest electricity is consumed at any given time.
