How can one of Germany’s largest airports become a role model for sustainable energy supply? Stuttgart Airport is showing how modern battery storage technology, smart charging station control and a green vision can work together. Together with Voltfang, it is taking a decisive step towards Net Zero – with a project that could set standards for entire industries.

Implemented use case

The Voltfang battery storage system at Stuttgart Airport serves several purposes at once: it optimizes PV self-consumption, caps load peaks, enables the charging of logistical charging infrastructure and ensures a stable power supply – even with strongly fluctuating energy demand. The integrated software takes care of smart energy management and adapts flexibly to the power requirements of the airport’s logistics and charging stations.

Aim of the project

The aim is to make airport operations completely greenhouse gas-neutral by 2040 at the latest. The current project with Voltfang’s customized solution is a decisive milestone in this regard – and just the beginning: a tenfold increase in battery storage capacity to 5.4 MWh is already being planned. The charging infrastructure for e-trucks can and should be expanded further.

Our customized solution

Voltfang worked closely with its partner Omexom to customize a battery storage system for Stuttgart Airport. A powerful, modular storage system consisting of electric car batteries with a capacity of 540 kWh and a central hub for sub-distribution was installed. This solution enables a supply capacity of up to 1 MW and a provision capacity of up to 2 MW. As a result, the battery storage system integrates the existing charging infrastructure for the airport’s logistics and e-trucks through an integrated energy management system.
