Large-scale storage systems for municipal utilities and grid operators—operated cost-effectively and optimized to support the grid.
We implement large-scale battery storage systems for municipal utilities, from planning through to ongoing operation. We coordinate the connection and operating procedures with grid operators from the very beginning—to ensure that the storage system benefits the power grid.

For Municipal Utilities
We'll take care of your large-scale storage system—from project management to operations
A large-scale energy storage system broadens your business’s reach and strengthens the energy supply in your region. We’ll take care of everything involved: permitting, grid connection, integration, and operation.
How a Large-Scale Energy Storage System Benefits Your Municipal Utility
Additional Revenue
From balancing power and electricity trading; your business will be more diversified.
Making Better Use of Our Own Renewable Energy
At the site of your wind or solar farms, the storage system absorbs excess electricity and releases it at a later time.
Strengthening the Network and the Region
When operated to support the system, the storage facility stabilizes the power system and can help avoid costly grid expansion.
“Battery storage systems are a key component of the energy transition, particularly for stabilizing the power grids, integrating renewable energy, and reducing the need for costly grid expansion.”
Ingbert Liebing, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Municipal Enterprises (VKU)
Here's How We Support You
Permits & Grid Connection
We’ll handle the building permit application and utility connection registration on your behalf—including all technical documentation.
A contact person
Our project management team coordinates all trades and partners. We are responsible for the project.
Operations without In-House Staff
Our service engineers handle remote monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting—around the clock, throughout the entire service life.
Marketing Options of Your Choice
You can market your products yourself, with your partner, or through our network of leading marketing agencies; our EMS has open interfaces with popular providers.
Financing
Whether you finance the storage facility yourself or partner with investors to bring it to fruition, we’ll work with you to develop the right model—with financial backing from an infrastructure investment fund.
For Network Operators
A partner who takes your needs into account right from the start
Grid operators are receiving more connection requests for storage systems than ever before. We make the collaboration process easy: with well-developed projects, complete documentation, and an approach that fits your grid.
How System-Supporting Storage Benefits Your Grid
Relieving congestion
The storage facility absorbs electricity when a transmission line or substation reaches its capacity limit, and releases it later.
Less Redispatch
Grid operators need to intervene less frequently and reduce or increase the output of power plants to prevent overloads.
Make Better Use of the Existing Network
The storage system smooths out peaks. This allows existing lines to be utilized more efficiently and helps avoid some costly grid expansions.
Here's How We Support You
Mature Projects
The area, layout, and documentation are all finalized before we submit our inquiry.
Standard-Compliant Planning
Grid connection, protection, and metering concept in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4110/4120, including system certification.
System-Oriented Driving
Our EMS implements your specifications at the grid connection point—including within the framework of flexible grid connection agreements.
Use Existing Connections
Storage at the grid connection points of existing wind and solar farms, or the reuse of decommissioned industrial connections.
Designated Contact Person
A technical contact person from the connection request through to operation.
Frequently Asked Questions from Utility Companies and Municipal Utilities
Generally speaking, no: Due to unbundling regulations, grid operators are generally not permitted to own or operate battery storage systems. Exceptions are only possible with approval from the Federal Network Agency. Municipal utilities can own a storage facility through their sales or generation company. Voltfang works with grid operators as partners for grid connection and operational management.
A grid-friendly battery storage system is operated in a way that supports the power grid: It complies with the specifications at the grid connection point, absorbs excess electricity when it is available, and releases it when needed. At Voltfang, the energy management system coordinates this operation with the grid operator’s specifications.
Voltfang handles the grid connection request, planning, and registration in accordance with VDE-AR-N 4110/4120, including the protection and metering concept. We coordinate the connection point, voltage level, and operating mode with the grid operator at an early stage to ensure that the process remains predictable and fully documented.
No. Voltfang handles the technical operations management: 24/7 remote monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting by our own service engineers. The municipal utility decides on strategy and marketing; we are responsible for technical operations.
That’s up to the municipal utility. It can market the energy itself, partner with an existing provider, or gain access to leading marketing companies through Voltfang. Voltfang’s EMS has open interfaces to common providers.
Yes, in many cases. A storage facility can be co-located at the grid connection point of a wind or solar farm (co-location) or can make use of a decommissioned industrial connection. Voltfang is building a 21-MWh storage facility in Aachen on a former industrial site with an existing connection.
Starting in February 2025, grid operators will be able to agree with energy storage operators to limit the connected capacity temporarily or dynamically. This will allow energy storage systems to be connected even at congested grid points. Voltfang’s EMS implements these requirements during operation.
