Our Impact Report in Focus: What the PV Magazine Writes About Green Battery Storage
Voltfang, Europe’s leading developer and manufacturer of high-performance green energy storage systems for industry and business, publishes a new report on “Resilient Europe through Green Battery Storage.” With this report, Voltfang demonstrates that sustainability is not just an ethical obligation but a strategic necessity for businesses and economies. In 2023, Voltfang was able to save nearly 200 tons of CO2 equivalents and over 270 tons of critical raw materials through the production of its sustainable storage solutions from second-life electric vehicle batteries.
According to various calculations by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems, 100 GWh of electric storage capacity will be needed in Germany by 2030, and 180 GWh by 2045. Globally, the demand for energy storage is expected to rise to 1 TWh by 2030, corresponding to a volume of 250 billion euros in Europe alone. Voltfang plans to scale its production to 900 MWh by 2030.
“We are currently heavily dependent on China for battery materials. Building European production is therefore an essential component for the strategic competitiveness of Europe. It is crucial that we establish and maintain a complete value chain in Germany. This should include extraction, production, and recycling of materials. Through reuse and recycling, we not only reduce production-related CO2 emissions but also decrease our dependence on third countries. This strengthens the region and Europe, ensuring stable supply chains and resilience in times of crisis,” says David Oudsandji, co-founder and CEO of Voltfang.
In its report, Voltfang highlights the feasibility of European battery production. Currently, 93% of procurement expenses for its storage solutions go to local and national suppliers, with 16% coming directly from the Aachen region. Due to hardware limitations, there are exceptions where components need to be sourced internationally. For the future, Voltfang is striving to ensure compliance with sustainable and ethical principles by introducing due diligence for its suppliers.
“The transition to sustainable practices offers many advantages. It can drive innovation, create jobs, and ensure the long-term survival of industries. Moreover, it can facilitate Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral continent. This goal, once considered utopian, is now within reach,” says David Oudsandji.
