Voltfang Opens Europe’s Largest Second-Life Battery Storage Factory with NRW Minister-President Wüst

Aachen, August 20, 2025 – Voltfang, a leading provider of green battery storage solutions for industrial, commercial, and grid-scale applications, has officially opened its new production site, the “Voltfang Future Fab,” in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The facility was inaugurated by NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wüst and Aachen’s Mayor Sibylle Keupen. The plant will manufacture powerful, high-energy-density storage systems, with production scheduled to reach 250 MWh per year by the end of 2026 and 1 GWh per year by 2030.

Located in the TRIWO Technopark Aachen, the 6,000 m² site occupies the former production halls of electric vehicle manufacturer Next.e.GO. Since production began in April, Voltfang has been building advanced energy storage systems using second-life and surplus batteries from the European automotive industry. This resource-efficient approach reduces dependence on Asian supply chains and strengthens local value creation. Over the past year, Voltfang’s production capacity has increased fivefold, contributing significantly to the energy transition and the long-term competitiveness of Germany’s industrial sector.

The opening event was attended by numerous political and industry guests. NRW Minister-President Hendrik Wüst stated:
“Voltfang demonstrates how sustainable innovations can deliver real momentum and strengthen the competitiveness of our industry. With the opening of Europe’s largest second-life battery factory, Voltfang is setting a milestone for a future-proof energy system. Used batteries are turned into powerful storage systems that enhance energy security and reduce critical dependencies on global supply chains. Innovations like these strengthen structural change in the Rhenish mining region and create new opportunities for the area.”

David Oudsandji, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Voltfang, expressed his enthusiasm about the strong interest:
“The battery storage market is growing dynamically, and Voltfang is actively shaping this growth. Today’s opening marks an important step for Voltfang and sends a strong signal for the future of energy supply in Germany and Europe. We are delighted to welcome so many partners, supporters, and companions here in Aachen today. Our vision is to develop high-performance battery storage solutions for German and European industries and to manufacture them here in Germany. With this new facility, we are not only scaling up but also making an essential contribution to the economic, ecological, and social transformation of the lignite mining region in North Rhine-Westphalia.”
