Groundbreaking for Grid-Scale Project in NRW/Germany – Voltfang’s 20 MWh Large-Scale Battery for Grid Stability and Energy Trading

Aachen/Alsdorf, May 5, 2025 – Voltfang, a leading German provider of green battery storage systems for industry, commerce, and grid-scale applications, has begun construction on one of the first grid-serving large-scale storage facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia. The plant will be directly connected to Regionetz’s medium-voltage grid via a nearby substation and is expected to go into operation by the end of 2025. With a storage capacity of 20.34 MWh and an output of 9.5 MW, the project sets new standards for the integration of battery storage into the German electricity market and underlines the company’s commitment to the energy transition and grid stability.

The large-scale battery storage system is composed of components manufactured in Germany: four Voltfang 2 Plus GS units made from high-performance EV batteries and four WS-Tech inverters. Primarily used for grid services and electricity trading, the system is integrated with Voltfang’s “Energy Trader” algorithm, allowing it to respond dynamically to market signals—charging when prices are low and the grid is under strain, and discharging when prices are high and supply is limited. This helps stabilize the grid and balance fluctuations.

“Energy storage systems of this scale are crucial for the stability of our power grid and the security of supply for German industry. This project is a truly feasible undertaking with a direct grid connection. By connecting it, we are proving that high-performance, large-scale storage solutions ‘Made in Germany’ are already becoming a reality. We don’t need imports from Asia to meet the challenges of our energy infrastructure,” emphasizes Afshin Doostdar, CTO and co-founder of Voltfang.

Roman Alberti, CSO and co-founder of Voltfang, adds: “Grid-scale storage is a vital building block for Europe’s energy security. It increases grid resilience, improves the economics of renewable energy, and ensures a sustainable energy supply. Each project of this kind brings us one step closer to a stable and future-proof energy system.”

Voltfang is already planning additional large-scale battery projects in Germany to relieve pressure on the power grid and further reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
